Introduced in 2001, the .NAME universal TLD is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are known by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to order john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed third-level domain names remained operational.
