Every registered domain has no less than two Name Server records which show where it is hosted i.e. by using these records you direct your domain to the servers of a certain hosting provider. That way, you have got both your website and your emails managed by the exact same provider. On the lower level of the Domain Name System (DNS), on the other hand, there are lots of other records, for example A and MX. The former shows which server handles the website for a given domain and is always an IP address (123.123.123.123), while the latter shows which server handles the e-mails and is always an alphanumeric string (mx1.domain.com). As an illustration, whenever you enter a domain name in your browser, your request is directed through the global DNS system to the provider whose NS records the domain address uses and from there you may be directed to the servers of a different service provider provided you have set an IP address of the latter as an A record for your Internet domain. Having separate records for the website and the e-mails means that you could have your website and your emails with two different companies if you wish.

Custom MX and A Records in Web Hosting

If you have a web hosting account through our company and you would like to point either your website or your emails to a different company, it will take you literally only 2 clicks to do it. Our Hepsia Control Panel provides an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains will be listed alphabetically and you will be able to see and change the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you wish to use a different e-mail provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the standard two, it is not going to take more than a few mouse clicks either to add them. You can even set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the higher the priority a certain MX record will have. The propagation of each record that you modify or set up isn't going to take more than several hours and if needed, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which reveals how long a record will remain active after it's modified or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

Accessing and modifying the A or MX records for each of your domains or subdomains is very easy if you purchase a semi-dedicated server plan from us. The accounts are handled through our in-house built Hepsia CP, which has a section dedicated to the DNS records of your domain names. The latter is going to be listed alphabetically and you can click on any one of them to see both the A and the MX records. Changing any record is as easy as typing in the new one in a text box and saving the change, so even when you have never dealt with such matters before, you won't experience any issues if you want to point your website or emails to a different provider while keeping the second service with our company. When necessary, you could also set up additional MX records and set a certain priority depending on the instructions of the new provider.
